Alert for lower than expected rainfall: Colombia faces water deficit

In view of the growing concern about insufficient rainfall, Ideam warns of energy risks due to below-normal rainfall in April.

The Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (Ideam) announced the possibility of heavy rainfall in the country, although it emphasized that it will be below what is expected for April. On the other hand, the Ministry of Environment informed that a detailed analysis by Ideam revealed this situation, contradicting the initial forecasts, generating an alert due to the fact that rainfall will be significantly below the usual levels for the month of April.

This weather alert, which forecasts rainfall until next Monday, April 22, comes in the midst of the water deficit faced by the country, which has generated cuts in the provision of the service and several measures to reduce water consumption. To this scenario is added the possibility that the shortage could affect the filling process of national reservoirs and pose energy challenges for the country.

The El Niño phenomenon continues to exert its influence on climate variability, although it is expected to weaken towards a neutral condition in the coming months. This situation has been discussed in the Advisory Commission for Coordination and Follow-up of the Country's Energy Situation (Cacsse), emphasizing the importance of weekly updates from Ideam to adopt adequate measures in the face of climate changes.

In view of this situation, the Ministry of Mines and Energy has implemented 15 reinforcement measures to guarantee the country's energy stability. These measures include inspections of energy facilities, incentives for efficient energy consumption and generation from renewable sources.

The joint approach of the ministries reflects a proactive response to the challenges posed by climate change, promoting efficiency and sustainability in the use of the country's energy resources.

In this context of climate challenges, it is crucial that citizens join the collective effort to take care of water and energy resources. Small everyday actions can make a big difference. Some simple tips for saving water include repairing leaks, turning off the tap while brushing teeth or washing dishes, and opting for short showers instead of long baths. In addition, using energy-efficient appliances, turning off lights when not needed, and unplugging electronic devices in standby mode are recommended. In times of climate crisis, only through the joint efforts of all sectors of society can we achieve significant results and promote a sustainable future for all.
