La especialización en medicina familiar en trabajo colaborativo con la facultad de humanidades y la oficina de inclusión crearon y realizaron el día 12 de febrero la primera de cuatro narrativas de sexualidad. Este evento se denominó; “El ABC del sexo, el género y la orientación sexual. Se contó con la participación de los residentes y docentes de medicina familiar, estudiantes de pregrado de medicina y estudiantes del programa de derecho. La sesión estuvo orientada por el Dr. Isidro Torres Castro por parte de la especialización de medicina familiar, el Dr. Luis Carlos Quintero Malo de la facultad de ciencias de la salud y por la facultad de humanidades las Dras. Martha Cecilia Abella y Katherine Torres. Fue un evento académico donde tanto expositores como participantes expresaron sus opiniones y conocimientos sobre el tema.

First Congress of Family Medicine, from the evidence to the clinic

After a thorough preparation process, selection of speakers, residents and teachers of the Family Medicine specialization of the University Foundation Navarra-UNINAVARRA held the first Congress of Family Medicine, endorsed by SOCMEF (Colombian Society of Family Medicine), in the southern region of Colombia.
This magnificent event took place on November 29 in a day of 10 hours of continuous learning, in the auditorium Ludivia Vanegas of the ESE Carmen Emilia Ospina. High level speakers such as: Henry Javier Gutiérrez (Geneticist), Carolina Corcho (Former Minister of Health), Camila Suaza (Pediatric Oncologist), Álvaro Mondragón (Fellow of Hematology and Clinical Oncology), Arlex Mosquera (Specialist in pain and palliative care) and Martha Hernández (Physiatrist) participated in the event. There were also excellent presentations by Family Medicine specialists Lina Arce, Isidro Torres, Carlos Reyes, Martha Niebles, Johnatan Portes and Ingrid Garcia. Likewise, Family Medicine residents María Araque, John Romero, Leidy Hernández, Daniel Almario and Cristian Conde, Wilmer Esquivel made their contribution leading the workshops.
The evaluation of the attendees was satisfactory and the main objective of the congress was fulfilled, which was to show in 20 minutes what the problem-solving physician can do in his daily practice with respect to the topics discussed.

Incoming mobility in the public health course

The professional Viviana Carolina García, Nurse, Specialist in Epidemiology and Master in mental health and professional of epidemiological surveillance of the Departmental Health Secretariat in vector-borne events, participated as a guest lecturer. This important contribution to the training of first semester Family Medicine residents took place on December 17, 2024 at the facilities of the University Foundation Navarra-UNINAVARRA.
In this class, the students were updated on pathologies such as dengue, zika, yellow fever, among others. Epidemiological processes, reporting mechanisms, diagnosis, timely management and preventive actions were reviewed.

Meditation and health

Meditation, an ancient practice originating in traditions such as Buddhism and Hinduism, has become a scientifically supported tool for improving physical and mental health. Several studies have shown its positive impact on stress management, emotional regulation and overall well-being. It is a tool to be taken into account for the integral management of patients.

Worldwide, approximately 500 million people practice some form of meditation, and its popularity continues to grow. According to a study by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) in the United States, meditation use among adults increased from 4.1 % in 2012 to 14.2 % in 2017, demonstrating a growing interest in this noninvasive and accessible practice.

In Colombia, meditation is gaining ground as part of corporate wellness and public health programs. Although there is no specific national data on the number of practitioners, a report by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) highlights that 41 % of Colombians suffer from chronic stress, which has prompted the inclusion of techniques such as mindfulness in psychological therapies and educational programs.

In order to show changes in the physiology of individuals, a study was conducted with second semester residents, comparing baseline and post-meditation states, evaluating different variables. Here, an evident improvement in lung volumes measured by spirometry, in cardiac variability with modulated breathing during one minute and in maximum strength quantified by the hangrip was demonstrated, which shows the great changes with just one meditation session.

Obstructive sleep apnea

With a lecture on obstructive sleep apnea, the definition, epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical picture and special emphasis on diagnosis, active search for the disease and its relationship with increased cardiovascular risk were presented.
Since the talk was aimed at primary care physicians, a large part of the presentation was also devoted to describing all the tools, recommendations and activities that can be carried out at this level of complexity in the search for prevention of this condition, early diagnosis and timely and appropriate treatment to avoid complications in patients with this disease.

We are pleased to announce that, in response to the request of students in their last semesters and thanks to the efforts of the directors of the Medicine program, the Teaching-Service agreement with the National Institute of Forensic Medicine and Forensic Sciences has been reactivated.

Starting today, tenth semester students will have the opportunity to perform their internships in clinical and forensic pathology, strengthening their training in this important field.

This achievement fills us with pride, as it positions Uninavarra as the only university institution in southern Colombia with this prestigious agreement. An alliance that will benefit our future doctors, providing them with key tools to face medical-legal challenges and consolidating our commitment to academic and professional excellence.

Participation of Family Medicine in the comprehensive forum for gender affirmation

Transgender people face a series of barriers at the time of their health care. These are associated with different situations associated with health personnel's lack of knowledge of the care routes, of the P&P activities associated with vulnerable population, lack of education in the professionalization institutions on sexuality issues, erroneous beliefs and social constructs.

It is essential for the family physician to be empathetic when caring for trans persons, to know the procedures for initiating all treatment processes, and to provide differential care, since not all trans persons want hormone therapy or sex reassignment surgery.

These were some of the points discussed in the presentation by Dr. Isidro Torres, Coordinator of the Family Medicine specialization of UNINAVARRA in the integral forum for gender reaffirmation, organized by the Mayor's Office and the Governor's Office of Huila, held on October 30, 2024.

Hepatic Steatosis

The liver is one of the organs with the greatest number of functions at the level of the human organism, its name comes from the word fig, which was used to feed birds and to obtain a culinary delicacy and the word evolved to the current term in the Spanish language.

Hepatic steatosis is a fat accumulation at hepatocyte level and is directly related to metabolic disorders such as obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. This is the reason why this pathology has relevance in primary care since they are preventable pathologies. Prolonged consumption of alcohol and certain medications (amiodarone, methotrexate, corticosteroids, valproic acid), viral hepatitis C, pregnancy, celiac disease, Wilson's disease and hypothyroidism are important factors that contribute to impair liver function and promote fat accumulation and cellular apoptosis.
On the other hand, it is essential that the physician knows the different methods that allow risk calculation, such as the FIB 4 risk calculator (AST, ALT and platelets), APRI (AST and platelets) and NFS (Glucose, AST, ALT, platelets and albumin), all of which have different sensitivity and specificity.
Updated guidelines for approach and management reinforce and emphasize healthy lifestyle habits, with weight reduction goals even in those patients who are not obese. The current outlook for medical interventions has opened up with the advent of GLP-1, dual analogs, and bariatric surgery as treatments for this important health problem.

Last narrative of the year 2024

On November 6, 2024, the last narrative of the year was held, with the theme of suicide as a public health problem. This topic was treated in a transdisciplinary way by Dr. Martha Cecilia Abella (lawyer) and Dr. Isidro Torres Castro (family physician), allowing a dialogue of knowledge and narration of experiences by exhibitors and the public of the event.
Different positions on suicide were highlighted, from philosophical, religious and biological sciences. Also the Colombian legislation on this subject and its repercussion within the crimes that can be committed by health personnel and their role in the management of a person who attempts suicide.
Statistics from different time periods worldwide and in Colombia on this event and the fatal or disabling results that suicide attempts generate were analyzed. The social and mental problems associated with suicide were also addressed. This narrative allowed the exploration of different perspectives on the right to life and the right to death, as well as different positions of residents, students, professors and community members regarding this public health situation.
The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences together with the Family Medicine program of UNINAVARRA, received a satisfactory evaluation of the four narratives of death and plans to continue in 2025 with this type of activities associated with other important issues for both academia and society in general.

Art and Family Medicine: An Art and Community Education Event

With a full house at the Pigoanza theater in the city of Neiva, the event Art and Family Medicine took place. Tenth, ninth and eighth semester undergraduate medical students, along with residents of the Family Medicine program made an extraordinary staging a reality on November 6, 2024.
Through dance, theater and other artistic manifestations, students and residents were able to recreate the topics of death, human sexuality, vaccination, prenatal checkups, cervical cancer and breastfeeding in a powerful way. The objectives of the didactic strategy were fully met, allowing for the reinforcement of knowledge by students and residents, teaching of non-medical personnel (art teachers), creativity, collaborative work and community education.
This event demonstrates how in a different way UNINAVARRA can interact with the community and students, improve their soft skills and at the same time improve their academic skills. The attendees expressed their joy at having learned in an entertaining activity full of creativity and professionalism.
This activity is already part of UNINAVARRA's unmistakable mark as an innovative leader in academic and community activities.

Mobility assistive devices Sociocultural tour

On November 01, 2024, within the framework of the great creative session, a socio-cultural tour of the assistive devices for mobility was conducted by the first year Family Medicine resident Gerly Vanessa Rincón Puentes. We counted with the participation of different people who agreed to be linked to this important event, through videos made, prior verbal consent; also with the collaboration of a medical device store, which provided different elements of walking aids that allowed a practical activity.

Participants were guided through a socio-cultural tour, where they reviewed historical data on walking aids from prehistoric times, through Egypt, Mesopotamia, Europe, among others; they were highlighted as religious symbols, as an accessory in characters of different film productions and the history of the Aesculapius staff as a symbol of medicine was highlighted.

In a virtual tour, we visited Pana Pana Montealegre in the department of Guainía, where Jorge Hernán Pérez Medina, through a significant video, showed the use of the mobility device, its importance, adaptation and also the harmonious coexistence between the evangelical values and the indigenous culture of the region.

With each device, mention was made of its components and the percentage of body discharge. Some of the types of gait were also described and the limitations that each person has, from the acquisition of these devices in the market to their use, were analyzed.

Finally, a review of the literature was carried out by mentioning systematic reviews and scientific studies. The studies that stand out are those that associate the environment in which individuals live, adaptation to mobility devices, beliefs, embarrassment for their use, knowledge of health personnel and health education for the use of these devices.

Gender violence facilitated by technology

Technology-facilitated gender-based violence is defined as, "Acts by one or more people who harm others on the basis of their sexual or gender identity or by imposing harmful gender norms. These acts, for which the internet or mobile technology is used, consist of harassment, intimidation, sexual harassment, defamation, hate speech, and exploitation" (Hinson et al., 2018: 1).
Its importance in terms of health outcomes and the dire consequences that can result from this type of violence make it a fundamental issue to address in this day and age. It is striking that physical and psychological violence in the real world has similar characteristics to that which takes place in the virtual world, and the latter can also lead to physical and mental health consequences.
There are different modalities of technology-facilitated violence such as: Sextortion, image-based abuse, cyberstalking, doxing, cyberstalking, cyberbullying, online grooming for sexual crimes and inflicting further harm to people who have been abused, among others. Finally, digital Gaslighting was also discussed, which is a form of domestic psychological abuse, carried out by manipulating the victim's reality, by means of IOTs, which seeks to make them question their sanity, memory or perception.
This was the topic discussed by Dr. Isidro Torres Castro on November 13, 2024 at the VI National Gender Congress, UNINAVARRA. The audience welcomed his presentation and the notorious participation in the face of such an important current problem.

Update on type 2 diabetes mellitus

Type 2 diabetes mellitus has become a pandemic, with 600 million people with this diagnosis and approximately 240 million underdiagnosed, it is one of the most important public health problems globally.
Since diabetes is a preventable syndrome, a disproportionate increase in incidence and prevalence is observed every year. Prevention should be carried out from gestation and continue in each of the life cycles of individuals, with emphasis on screening, healthy lifestyles and healthy aging.

The early detection of type 2 diabetes mellitus is a success as it has been demonstrated that its control at this stage contributes to the regeneration of beta cells and to the decrease of apoptotic processes of these cells. On the other hand, plasticity of other cell types such as beta cells has been discovered, which can be reprogrammed to replace the activities of pancreatic beta cells. These discoveries are encouraging, but at the same time they are a call to health personnel to emphasize prevention and health promotion activities.

DM2 is already known as a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease and Takotsubo syndrome, however, recent studies show a direct association and similarities in all its pathophysiological processes. Similarly, a defect in bone quality in patients with DM2 predisposes them to fractures, mainly of the femoral neck. Dental problems such as periodontitis have also been observed in patients with diabetes mellitus, to which alterations have been added in those who have implants, due to lack of fixation of these in uncontrolled diabetes.

Osteoporosis, a clinical case

Osteoporosis is an important process associated with aging, but there are also other directly related risk factors such as endocrine diseases, including Diabetes mellitus type 1: associated with lower bone density and an increased risk of fractures, due to a combination of factors such as oxidative stress and chronic inflammation. Hyperthyroidism: Excess thyroid hormones accelerate bone metabolism, increasing bone resorption and decreasing bone mineral density.
Hyperparathyroidism: Elevated parathyroid hormone increases bone resorption, which decreases bone density. Hypogonadism: Deficiency of sex hormones (estrogen and testosterone) reduces bone mass, as these hormones are essential for bone health. Cushing's Syndrome: Excess cortisol (natural or from glucocorticoid treatment) increases bone resorption and decreases bone formation, leading to osteoporosis.
Also rheumatological diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis: Chronic inflammation and the use of corticosteroids in its treatment contribute to bone loss and the risk of osteoporosis. Spondyloarthritis: Similar to rheumatoid arthritis, this inflammatory condition affects the bones and joints, increasing the risk of bone loss.
Similarly, malabsorption syndromes such as Crohn's disease: Intestinal inflammation and malabsorption of essential nutrients (such as calcium and vitamin D) affect bone health. Primary biliary cirrhosis: Impaired absorption of vitamin D and other essential nutrients can lead to deficiencies that affect bone density. Hemochromatosis, celiac disease, osteoporosis and bariatric surgery should also be mentioned. Infectious diseases (HIV), cancers and COPD are also on the list of pathologies associated with this disorder.

Well-deserved recognition

On November 15, 2024, at the Day of the Best gala, the Fundación Universitaria Navarra-UNINAVARRA recognized Dr. Carlos Reyes Guio as the best teacher of the Family Medicine specialization. Dr. Reyes is distinguished for his clinical assertiveness and his extensive up-to-date knowledge of the most prevalent pathologies that reach the primary care setting. Also noteworthy are his expository skills and his great spirit of collaboration with all the activities carried out by the program. Congratulations to Dr. Reyes Guio for this great achievement.

Internal mobility of specialists in public health courses

Recognizing the importance of diversifying knowledge and strengths in terms of training of specialists from outside the institution, Dr. Alberto Riaño Dussan was invited as president magistrate of the Medical Ethics Tribunal of Huila. Dr. Riaño is a physician specialized in pediatric surgery and a lawyer, specialist in disciplinary law. The third semester course Public Health, directed by Dr. Pablo Tinjacá counted with the mastery of this renowned specialist to expand one of the topics, on October 28, 2024.

The residents had the opportunity to ask questions in an open forum and clarify different concepts concerning the subject. We would like to thank Dr. Alberto for his extraordinary participation and for allowing inter and transdisciplinary contact in the training process.

Visit of the Family Medicine program to the Embera Chami Kerakar indigenous community.

Within the framework of the subject of ethnography, all teachers and residents of the specialization in Family Medicine of UNINAVARRA, made a visit to the Embera Chami Kerakar community, located in the village of San Isidro Bajo in the municipality of Campoalegre, Huila, on October 25, 2024.

In this immersion in the community, a characterization of this population that arrived in the department of Huila displaced from Chocó, with a previous settlement in the department of Putumayo and in the municipality of Tarqui, was carried out. Within the activities to get to know the community, we observed their living conditions, organization, public services, beliefs, health conditions and interviewed members of the community to corroborate what was observed.

Educational activities were carried out through games with the children of the settlement. A campaign was also carried out to eradicate pediculosis, which affects a large part of the child and adult population. Shampoo sachets were handed out for the control of ectoparasites and the children were taught how to remove the eggs and arthropods with combs that were donated to the community.

Finally, a snack was shared with the inhabitants of this town and we were grateful for the opportunity to learn and collaborate with the community work inherent to the specialization.

Participation of Dr. Martha Niebles in the Family Medicine Congress of Universidad El Bosque.

From October 24 to 26, 2024, Dr. Martha Niebles, specialist in Family Medicine and professor of postgraduate studies at the University Foundation Navarra - UNINAVARRA, was invited to participate in the XIII National Congress and V International Congress of Family Medicine: "Interpretation of Tests in Primary Care", organized by the Universidad El Bosque in the city of Bogota under a hybrid modality. This event brought together general practitioners, specialists, family medicine residents and medical students from various universities in Colombia, such as Universidad Javeriana, Universidad de La Sabana, Fundación Universitaria Sanitas, FUCS, UPTC, Fundación Universitaria Juan N. Corpas, Universidad de Santander and Universidad del Norte in Barranquilla, among others. In addition, it was attended by prominent national and international speakers, and lasted approximately 26 hours distributed over the three days.

During her intervention on the first day of the congress, Dr. Niebles presented a detailed vision of the Family Medicine specialization program at UNINAVARRA, highlighting the academic and practical activities that are carried out in the city of Neiva. He shared with the attendees the research work carried out by the residents and the collaborative learning dynamics that constitute a fundamental pillar in their training. He also emphasized the comprehensive approach to medical care that characterizes the UNINAVARRA program.

The congress covered a wide range of topics relevant to family medicine, including practical workshops on insulinization, polysomnography interpretation in primary care, and diagnostic techniques such as spirometry, renal function tests and genetic diagnosis. The speakers also presented updates on the management of metabolic diseases, orphan diseases and the interpretation of diagnostic tests, all with a comprehensive approach oriented to medical practice.

Dr. Niebles expressed her gratitude for the invitation and the opportunity to share her experience with other health professionals, as well as to strengthen academic ties between universities. This type of event is fundamental to promote the exchange of knowledge and the implementation of innovative practices in the field of family medicine, contributing to the professional development of general practitioners and specialists.

NLP and medicine an experiential and thought-diversifying course of study

Neurolinguistic programming is a set of techniques that allow for permanent transformations in individuals in a short period of time. It was developed by John Grinder and Richard Bandler in the 1970s in California, USA. These two masters observed people who stood out in their time, such as Virginia Satir, Fritz Perls and Milton Erickson, finding that each one showed different behavioral patterns that allowed them to stand out from other people.

In a theoretical-practical activity of 16 hours of duration, an experiential process was carried out, experiencing the basics of meditation, rapport, linguistic processes, mental maps, Gestalt therapy, programming of the unconscious and Ericksonian hypnosis. This process was framed within the specialization curriculum subject, NLP and family medicine, whose main objective was to broaden the residents' thinking and provide them with tools to facilitate their communication with patients and the doctor-patient relationship.

The residents and teachers of the program participated in techniques that allowed them to express emotions, work on limiting factors, mental viruses, and improve their relationship with the environment and with other people. In two days of work on October 18 and 19, curiosity about the neurophysiology of the human being and how it is present in the process of health and disease was sown. Here we also applied the premise of healing first in order to provide health to the patient, which is always present in the formative process of the residents.

Sensitive and drug-resistant tuberculosis workshop

In response to the call of the Departmental Secretariat of Health of Huila, on October 21, 2024, a workshop on sensitive and drug-resistant tuberculosis was held. This event was conducted by Dr. Giovanny Lastra, a physician specializing in pulmonology, and was attended by residents, teachers and interns of the Family Medicine program of UNINAVARRA.

The content of the workshop allowed to clarify concepts of tuberculosis management in conditions such as pregnancy, immunosuppression, miliary tuberculosis and other types of tuberculosis. It also emphasized the basic definitions of resistance and cure, among others. This workshop has been an important contribution to the training of residents and a collaborative activity with the governmental entities in charge of health management in the department.

Mourning, Pain or vanity?

The word mourning comes from the verb lugere which means to weep or lament, this term refers to expressions associated with grief. You will also find the Latin word luctus which means pain or affliction. On the other hand, the word duel comes from the Latin dolus which means pain, challenge or battle between two. When searching for these terms in some aspects it would seem that they are not differentiated and are used indistinctly, however, they are two different but associated things.

Euripides is credited with the following phrase. "The dead do not care what their funerals are like. The sumptuous funerals serve to satisfy the vanity of the living". It should be noted that funeral services are part of the mourning and rituals that are important within the mourning process, however, they are closely associated with social constructs, socioeconomic level or position of the deceased and his or her relatives. Mourning also has legal connotations and is legislated by laws that allow public servants and private sector workers to have paid leave days in the event of a bereavement event.

Grief, on the other hand, is an adaptive response to a loss, which is not necessarily associated with a death. There are responses in all dimensions of being: physical, sociocultural, mental, emotional and spiritual. Different authors have defined the stages of grief, such as Kûbler Rose, who describes denial, anger, sadness, negotiation and acceptance. Other authors such as Bolwy, Parkes, Engel; Sanders, describe different semantic sequences, but they all conclude that the stages are orderly and that the nature of grief does not depend on the loss but on the emotional meaning of the loss for each individual.

These and many more concepts were discussed in the third narrative of death, held in the auditorium of the Bank of the Republic on October 16, 2024, with the participation of Dr. Martha Abella (Dean of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences), Maria Araque (second year Family Medicine Resident) and Dr. Isidro Torres (Specialist in Family and Community Medicine) as speakers and an audience of students, residents and people from the community of Neiva.

IV national congress of family medicine, SOCMEF

Euthanasia, legal and medical aspects (Narratives of Death)

The term euthanasia etymologically means well-dying, and refers to the act of termination of life, at the request of the person and by health care personnel. Worldwide, 7 countries include in their jurisprudence or laws euthanasia as a procedure associated with the right to die with dignity, these are: Luxembourg, Belgium, Spain, Canada, Colombia, two states of Australia and the Netherlands. Three more countries have legislated on assisted dying: Switzerland and Germany and two states of the United States.

The main rulings of the Colombian constitutional court associated with this issue are: 239 of 1997: "the right to life cannot be reduced to mere subsistence, but implies living adequately in conditions of dignity". It has developed the Protocol for the application of the euthanasia procedure in Colombia, the National Superintendence of Health issued External Circular 13 of 2015 and the Ministry of Health, Resolution 971 of 2021, to specify the guidelines that manage the process to comply with the right to die with dignity.

In a dialogue of knowledge, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, with the Law program and the coordination of Family Medicine, and their research groups, presented the basic points of this issue considered a medical and legal dilemma, from the confrontation of the right to life and the right to die with dignity. This event took place in the auditorium of the library of the Bank of the Republic, on September 11, 2024, and was led by Dr. Martha Cecilia Abella and Dr. Isidro Torres Castro. It was attended by 120 people including teachers, students and people from the community of Neiva.

Orphan diseases: Knowing them to be able to think about them

Orphan diseases are chronically debilitating pathologies and have a prevalence of 1 per 5,000 live births. Approximately 7,000 are known worldwide, while 1,920 have been identified in Colombia. Diagnosis can be difficult due to barriers to access to specific methods for diagnosis. Likewise, access to treatment can be quite limited and can become conditions that interfere with the quality of life of both patients and their families.

Within the list we have cystic fibrosis, with an affectation of the gene CFTR and clinical characteristics such as: bronchiectasis, chronic pulmonary infections, pancreatic insufficiency, infertility (men). We also have mucopolysaccharidosis which is a group of diseases due to lack of enzymes involved in the metabolism of glycosaminoglycans; depending on the group we will have phenotypic characteristics such as macroglossia, coarse facies, short stature and corneal opacity, among other manifestations. Likewise, phenylketonuria, whose affected gene is PHA and characterized by mental retardation, microcephaly, hypopigmentation of the skin and phanera, seizures and behavioral disorders.

These were the aspects covered in the master lecture given by Dr. Henry Javier Gutiérrez Achury, aimed at family medicine teachers and residents. Dr. Gutiérrez showed the different diagnostic methods and explained in a simple way the interpretation of the most commonly used diagnostic tests for this type of diseases. Emphasizing the importance of their knowledge in primary care to be able to think about them and initiate the routes for their diagnosis and management. This activity was carried out on September 02, 2024.

Recreation as a key component of health outcomes

From the premise of the Family Medicine specialization: "Health must be worked from within the doctor" and in the framework of the celebration of the UNINAVARRA resident's day, a day of recreation for residents and teachers of family medicine was held on August 30, 2024.

With a collaborative work for cooking food, anecdotes, laughter, playful activities and swimming competitions, an event was held that allowed both residents and teachers to relax and rest from the daily academic routine.

Recreation is a fundamental component of health, it contributes to the mental and physical health of all human beings. It contributes to reduce the stress produced by the demands of daily life and allows the individual as a social being to develop. At the University Foundation of Navarra-UNINAVARRA we promote health, starting with our residents and teachers to achieve better results in the populations we serve.

Health education through social networks

Social networks have become a massive means of communication, where immediacy and easy dissemination of information allow rapid dissemination, synchrony and asynchrony. The academy is no stranger to this phenomenon and the specialization in family medicine on August 28, 2024, conducted through the agreement teaching at the service of the E.S.E. Carmen Emilia Ospina conducted a live interview whose objective was to educate the general population about the importance of healthy lifestyle habits and their relationship with improving health outcomes of chronic noncommunicable diseases.

Health, ergonomics and anti-stress activities for the College of Bacteriologists of Huila

The members of the College of Bacteriologists of Huila benefited from an activity carried out by the specialization of Family Medicine of UNINAVARRA. This activity took place on August 23, 2024 and had the objective of educating on health in terms of ergonomics, breathing activities, meditation and easy exercises to perform during the workday.

Human beings spend most of our time at work, often subjected to unfavorable postures for the body and involved in situations that alter mental health. It is therefore essential to implement active breaks that contain both relaxation, stress management and physical activity components to prevent diseases and improve work performance. Performing warm-up movements allows muscle conditioning to continue with the daily workday. Proper breathing provides general benefits in terms of better oxygenation of each cell, vasodilation, improvement of vital signs and better functioning of the nervous system in general. On this occasion, at the College of Bacteriology we teach you in a practical way the pranic breathing that allows us to incorporate these benefits to our daily life.

Meditation is an action of internal reflection, conscious in letting our brain enter into waves of relaxation and tranquility (alpha) independently of external situations that steal our calm. There are many techniques to perform it, the group of teachers and residents used a combination of breathing, muscle contractions, gradual relaxation, music, Tibetan singing bowls, nature noises, sandalwood aroma and following positive messages to give peace of mind to this important group of professionals.

This event is framed within the principles of Family Medicine and the obligation of the academy to leave the classrooms and practice institutions and actively reach out to the different groups of our society to educate in health.

Death from the history of peoples

With the masterful performance of the play the playfulness of deathThe first of four narratives of death began with a performance by Mery Elsy Cano Núñez, director of the Candilejas Cultural Corporation and Master in Education and Culture of Peace. This staging, which showed death associated with sadness, nostalgia and the joy of remembrance, served as an introduction to begin the journey through the history of death from the perspective of the people.

Death is part of life and talking about it allows us to learn to live better. Starting with Paleolithic groups such as the Neanderthal and Neolithic, of which there are traces of burials for their dead, to offerings and rituals as social events. Continuing with ancient Egypt where death was only a transitory step and a preparation to reach the final destination after the judgment of Osiris helped by the preparation that the living made for this important journey. Making a stop in the Rome and Greece of antiquity with its structured laws on death, necromancy and all the mythology that surrounded it. Without leaving aside the pre-Hispanic cultures with the Zapotecs, their god Pitao Pezeelao who communicated from the underworld through the song of the owls. Also the funerary constructions of the San Agustín culture in the department of Huila with its great necropolis that worshiped not only the local dead, but also those who came from more remote places like Peru and Bolivia.

Included in this historical and cultural journey were the Tibetan funeral traditions, the celestial burial where the soul is given to the birds. As well as the Haitian voodoo and the lumbalu of the Palenquero people of the Colombian Caribbean coast among others. This first narrative allowed to know the importance of death in different historical moments and to make a formative reflection on the transcendental of death in daily life and in university education.

Family Medicine contributing to the continuing education of general practitioners

In the improvement of health outcomes of the general population, continuing education of general practitioners is a fundamental aspect. Aware of this premise, the Family Medicine specialization of the University Foundation Navarra-UNINAVARRA, starts the first of its continuing education days at the E.S.E Carmen Emilia Ospina, at the Canaima headquarters. On July 26, the institution allowed its general practitioners to attend an activity of reinforcement and updating in the fundamental aspects of the approach and management of type 2 diabetes mellitus and arterial hypertension.

In this first approach, Family Medicine specialists Carlos Reyes and Isidro Torres and second semester resident John Romero exchanged knowledge on these topics with the general practitioners of the health service provider institution. Aspects of primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary prevention were addressed, focusing on the maintenance of people's health, and a workshop was held for the early detection of diabetic foot disease.

In this meeting it was possible to carry out a training process according to current guidelines and scientific evidence regarding prevention, screening, early diagnosis, timely control and management in all dimensions of being of these two health conditions. Both the entity and the physicians attending the event were satisfied and it is expected to continue with these conferences to contribute from the academy with the continuing education of general practitioners in the region.

Film and medicine as a didactic technique

"I have told my children that when I die, to release balloons in the sky to celebrate my graduation. For me, death is a graduation." Elisabeth Kübler-Ross.

This wonderful author, who always considered death as part of life, made a great advance in this difficult task of including death within education for living, and with the description of the five stages: denial, anger, sadness, negotiation and acceptance, she has allowed a better understanding of grief. Providing education on this topic is part of the healing process of a loss and is not a simple activity from an academic point of view.

In the same way, dealing with such a sensitive subject as infertility in a society whose construct almost forces couples to reproduce, represents a great challenge to achieve its understanding. The W.H.O. assures that one in six adults in the world is affected by fertility problems, which is why this issue requires important attention from health systems.

In a masterful way, residents María Araque and Gelithza Tole managed to transform the beliefs and previous knowledge of undergraduate students, residents and teachers on the topics of grief and infertility in their great creative session. These two graduate students succeeded through film and a television series in making an experiential process of the two topics. Using scenes from the film "The Cabin" by director Stuart Hazeldine, Dr. Araque conducted an emotional formative activity on grief and death, allowing feelings to surface and emphasizing the different stages of grief in the face of a death framed within the non-normative crises. Dr. Tole used a scene from the character Charlotte York Goldenblatt, from the series sex and the city , produced by Sarah Jessica Parker, emphasizing the whole context of her drama with infertility, showing in all dimensions of being the approach to this situation. These two great sessions showed an unforgettable way of dealing with two rather complex, but fundamental issues in the practice of family medicine. The two great sessions took place on July 19 and 26, 2024.

Third Cohort of Family Medicine Residents

For the period 2024-2, after knowledge tests, English, resume analysis and psycho-technical tests, six residents were selected to be part of the third cohort of UNINAVARRA residents for the Family Medicine program.

The residents were received in a welcome and induction ceremony on July 12, 2024 and that same afternoon they began their training process with the Family Medicine I foundation course. This group of aspiring medical-surgical specialists arrived full of expectations due to the different positive comments heard from the residents who are already part of the two previous cohorts. They were introduced to the different teachers, the different activities to be performed, as well as the different academic and administrative areas that work together for the good performance of the postgraduate training.

This group of future family physicians is quite varied, including undergraduate graduates from the Universidad Surcolombiana, Universidad San Martín, Universidad Rafael Núñez, among others. Also a multiregional inclusion of people from the Colombian Atlantic coast, southern Colombia, departments of Risaralda and Nariño and of course some regions of Huila.

Inhaler patient pairing

The term pairing refers to the union, analogy or conformity with which some things are linked or correspond to each other. In the case of wines, it is the relationship that exists between the type of wine and the food that is accompanied with it to enhance flavors and increase the pleasure of eating and drinking. It can be said that there is a perfect wine to accompany each food, traditionally it was said that red wine accompanied red meat, champagne caviar and oysters, sweet wine with dessert and white wine for meat and white fish. However, nowadays the term pairing goes far beyond these concepts and there are as many pairings as there are palates, flavors or tastes.

This analogy was used by first semester resident Gerly Vanessa Rincón Puentes, who on June 21, 2024, held the great session "Inhaler patient pairing. In this academic event the resident showed precisely the technological variety of inhalers and the presentations of each of the drugs they contain. It was clear that there are pneumatic and ultrasonic nebulizers, also that current devices can be pressurized, fine mist, dry powder that can generate one or multiple doses.

This variety of presentations of both the drugs to be inhaled and the technology that accompanies the different devices can lead to confusion, inadequate use of the drug or reduced adherence. For this reason, family physicians should know the different existing devices and when formulating them explain to the patient how to activate the device, how to use it optimally and how to store the medication. Also the importance of choosing the right inhaler according to the characteristics of each patient, therefore, there is a perfect inhaler for each patient who requires it.

Physical activity a driver of health and quality of life

The WHO defines physical activity as any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles, with the consequent consumption of energy. Taking into account this definition and its distinctions, we can include physical exercise and sports practices within this context.

The advantages of physical activity on the health of individuals have been widely evidenced, however, if we are certain that something is so favorable, why don't all human beings perform physical activity, exercise or sports? Taking into account that physical activity not only influences the physical aspects of people, but it is also directly associated with joy, socialization, emotions and concentration, we can conclude that there is no more effective and comprehensive remedy.

On June 7, President John Hagler Romero Abril, showed through transdisciplinarity and active participation of the community, his great session, the benefits of physical activity in all dimensions of being. He also exposed in a clear way the proper way to prescribe exercise within the ambulatory care setting of family medicine.

It should be noted that the resident works voluntarily with a group of inhabitants of the community of Fortalecillas who, with their group Mina Real, demonstrated the benefits of associating around dance for the improvement of health and quality of life.

Family Doctor's Day

Since 2010, the celebration of the International Day of the Family Physician began every May 19. Family medicine arises from the need to integrate health care, as a specialty it promotes the management of individuals from all their dimensions and through its nine principles promotes a holistic, differential, longitudinal and person-based care.

The contribution of family physicians to people's health has gone beyond the walls of the office and has improved care processes at the primary, hospital and administrative levels, as well as in the field of professional training. In Colombia there are currently one thousand family physicians and their work has transformed health care activities through their compassion and commitment to patients, families and communities.

On May 21, residents and family physicians of the South Colombian region gathered to honor their specialty. In this event they shared an academic activity and took the opportunity to define the qualities of the first congress of Huila in family medicine.

The pendulum of sexuality

Human sexuality is like a pendulum that has swung at historical, cultural, social, economic, religious, legal and scientific knowledge levels. The perception of sexuality has varied from a purely reproductive concept, a physiological process, to a need associated with desire and pleasure. In the same way, important distinctions have been noted in the concepts of sex, sexual orientation and gender. Scholars of sexuality such as Freud, Kinsey, Master and Johnson, among others, have attributed an academic character to the study of sexuality and have made it possible through different types of studies to learn about this subject, which has represented a taboo for humanity at many historical moments.

It is almost impossible to separate sexual behaviors from moral, religious, ethical and cultural aspects and much more difficult to understand the range of possibilities and aspects that encompass human sexuality. On the other hand, there is a very thin thread between the classification of the pathological and the normal within the sexual activities of individuals, since the factors involved in this categorization are very diverse.

This topic was extensively contextualized and discussed on May 15, 2024 in the last sexuality narrative organized by the Family Medicine specialization and the Vice-Rectory of Humanities of the University Foundation Navarra-UNINAVARRA.

Art and family medicine, a night of stars

With the attendance of more than 600 people, including students, teachers and members of the community of Neiva, the event art and family medicine was held at the Pigoanza theater on May 8, 2024. This activity organized by the family medicine program in its undergraduate area counted with the participation of eighth, ninth and tenth semester students of the subjects of family medicine I, II and III respectively.

The students majestically represented topics associated with family medicine such as diabetes mellitus, obesity, high blood pressure, low back pain, headache, vertigo, sexuality, death, IMCI, food safety, malnutrition, family dysfunction, pre-eclampsia, eclampsia and HELLP syndrome.

The didactic strategy art and family medicine arises as a tool to strengthen the students' knowledge of medicine and soft skills. Initially, the student reviews a topic in a group, exposes it and the teacher clarifies doubts and reinforces the different aspects. Subsequently, it is articulated with the area of arts of the university foundation and the student is in the task of first explaining the knowledge and take it to the understanding of the teachers of a subject completely different from medicine. Subsequently, in a collaborative work group of students expose their creative idea and with the art instructors establish an artistic presentation. They carry out practices with advice from the previously mentioned area and with direct supervision of the family medicine teachers. Finally, they perform their staging, which is graded with a rubric known by the students that establishes aspects such as knowledge, ability to clearly expose that knowledge to a non-medical audience, creativity, collaborative work and staging.

This strategy has allowed students to consolidate their knowledge, to be able to teach and educate in health. Overcome stage fright, considering themselves capable of making any type of presentation and overcoming their mental barriers. Work as a team and bring to a purpose a project where they will be observed and evaluated. All this without mentioning the great contribution that emotions and imagination bring to medical work for the achievement of a medicine based on compassion and holism. It is worth highlighting the contribution that these future doctors make to the community by teaching medical topics in an entertaining way that remains in the memory.

The presentation of the students was brilliant, like a firmament full of stars and aroused admiration, feelings of pride and even tears from the spectators, which also included relatives of the students of the Fundación Universitaria Navarra-UNINAVARRA.

The habits we are

Habits are actions that we perform unconsciously and that are part of our daily routines. Human beings have habits that allow our lives to flow without the need to think or plan activities. We must keep in mind that we also have habits that can represent a certain type of harm or obstacle to achieve goals. Smoking, excessive eating and sedentary lifestyles are among the most frequent and contribute to increased cardiovascular risk, cancer, obesity and diabetes, among others.

It is possible to change habits, but it is important to answer the question: why do I want to change it? This answer has to be something concrete in order to internalize the process. On the other hand, the change must represent something positive in the person and not a sacrifice or an unpleasant activity. It is also essential to create a routine for the initiation that includes the same time, the same place, the same environmental conditions and why not, make the transformation after a previous habit and enjoy adapting the brain to the new habit.

This was part of the dissertation of Dr. Isidro Torres, coordinator of the Family Medicine specialization of UNINAVARRA, at the III International Symposium of Family Medicine of the Universidad de la Sabana, held in Chía, Cundinamarca. His presentation was well received by the audience and was very consistent with the central theme of the symposium.

III International Symposium on Family Medicine - Universidad de la Sabana

Primary care from the home and the community was the central theme of the international symposium held by the Universidad de la Sabana on May 3 and 4, 2024. UNINAVARRA was present with teachers and residents at this important event. The topics presented at the event were relevant and current, associated with primary care at patients' homes. Currently there are entities that are responsible for providing this type of service, however, there is still a lack of adequate structuring so that this direct contact between health personnel with the patient and his family in their environment is a great opportunity for health characterization and health risk management.

Dressing with the patient's skin

Endometriosis affects approximately 10% of women of reproductive age. It is a chronic disease that is produced by the growth of endometrial tissue in structures other than the endometrium, which can be in close proximity or in distant sites such as the lungs. This disease produces a quite varied symptomatology, but pain is one of the causes that generates more consultation in affected patients.

On many occasions what these women feel is not validated and is normalized as a symptom associated with the menstrual cycle, or much worse conditioned to its chronicity and that women have to simply resign themselves and put up with this symptomatology. In her great session held on April 18, the second semester resident Tanya Duran, put herself in the shoes of one of her patients with endometriosis, in a very assertive way she showed all the dimensions affected in her patient. In this academic activity, Dr. Duran presented this pathology from the psychological, emotional, sociocultural, mental and spiritual perspective of the affected patient. This interpretation moved emotions and feelings in the whole audience and allowed an understanding of all the aspects involved in this condition. This innovative didactic technique allowed a comprehensive view of the subject to be discussed and allowed a parallel between the information in the medical literature and the reality of the patients.

Family and sexuality

The definition of the family has been transformed, and a diverse range of families has been created, where kinship and consanguinity are no longer the fundamental aspects of its conformation. Historically, the family did not include the nuclear family we know today and there is controversy as to whether this type of family is a social, religious or legal format.

The family is currently established as an open social group, which interacts with its environment and whose union can be by affinity, blood or legal ties. The family has great importance in the sexual education of its members and it has been shown that appropriate sexual education of children is a factor that delays the onset of sexual relations and helps in the appropriate use of contraceptive methods. It is recommended that parents educate about sexuality, participate in comprehensive sexual education processes, choose the moments to educate, teach children to call each organ by its name, validate the feelings and emotions of their children and also know their friends and what their children see on social networks.

These aspects were the subject of reflection and a comparison was made with law and medicine, establishing the role of the family physician in educational aspects. This activity, the third sexuality narrative, was held on April 15, 2024 and was satisfactorily evaluated by the attendees.

Health Week in the Judicial Branch

Being faithful to the fifth principle of family medicine "The family physician considers himself part of the community network of support and health care." Residents and teachers of the Family Medicine Specialization program were part of the event organized by the Judicial Branch of Neiva, called Health Week. Here, activities aimed at knowledge and establishment of healthy lifestyle habits were carried out. Methods were taught to incorporate healthy eating habits and easy exercises were taught to perform in daily life and thus contribute to the reduction of sedentary lifestyles. On April 8 and 9, 2024, the specialization was accompanied by undergraduate students and in a joint effort health education was brought to the workplace of these important members of the community of Neiva.

Balint as a strategy for self-knowledge

Balint with the first semester residents of the second cohort of the Specialization in Family Medicine program of UNINAVARRA. This space took place in a cafeteria near the institution's headquarters and was held on April 1st, 2024. The residents had the opportunity to have a dialogue on the patient-physician relationship and focused on the emotional aspects of patients. They discussed their difficulties with patients who are sad or angry and how these emotions influence the resident's nonverbal language and the countertransference that these emotions generate. She also discussed those patients with couple or family conflicts that are expressed during the consultation. Rapport, empathy, compassion and emotion validation guidelines were established. We also explained the ways of discovering the physician's limitations in the face of the patient's statements or preferences. Paths were established to self-evaluate and heal the physician's own aspects that become barriers at the moment of establishing a doctor-patient relationship.

Debriefing as a fundamental process in residents' simulated practice scenarios.

Debriefing is an activity that allows a conscious and intentional reflection of the student's performance after a simulated practice. The student has the opportunity to observe himself in his medical performance and analyze his communication habits, soft and specific competencies, as well as the quality of his care. The first semester Family Medicine residents performed debriefing after their practice with a simulated patient at the HUSAC, which allowed them to see and hear themselves in their medical performance, listen to the patients' perception of them, perform a self-evaluation, allow a co-evaluation by their peers and be attentive to the teachers' suggestions in their heteroevaluation. All these evaluations are free of judgments or numerical weighting that qualifies them. The simulated practice performed on March 20, 2024 was a formative space of great importance for the development of some competencies necessary for family medicine residents.

Desire, Sex and Love: A Second Narrative of Sexuality

The second Narrative of Sexuality, which focused on desire, love and sex from all dimensions of being, was successfully held on March 11. It also had its legal component that produced debates among the attendees and reflections on human sexuality from an integral point of view. Attendees expressed their satisfaction with the event and insisted that this type of activities should continue to be carried out and be extended to the community in general.

Integration of Family Medicine residents with family physicians in the region.

In an unprecedented event on March 12, 2024, the twelve Family Medicine residents of UNINAVARRA held a meeting with the Family Medicine specialists of the region. In this meeting, clinical issues were discussed and also, proposals were led to initiate the Southern Chapter of Family Medicine, making a schedule, with the active participation of residents. Proposals for the realization of the First South Colombian Congress of Family Medicine were also heard.

The second semester residents, Yelitza Tole and Maria Araque, presented the clinical case "Dyslipidemias, a look from family medicine", at the Congress of Family Medicine, from the versatility to the practice of Family Medicine. This clinical case was of a real patient treated in the city of Neiva at the Carmen Emilia Ospina E.S.E., where the intervention of the specialty allowed positive changes in the physical, psychosocial and family environment of the patient. Congratulations to the residents for their extraordinary participation!

Welcome to the second semester group of family medicine residents to the Medilaser Clinic.

On Friday, March 01, 2024, Clínica Medilaser offered a welcome event to the group of second semester residents of Family Medicine. The event was attended by the directors of Clínica Medilaser, Mrs. Myriam Parra, founding partner and the coordinator of the specialization in Family Medicine. The residents received the gown that identifies them as part of the medical team of the clinic and began their training process in the specialties of general surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics, gynecology and obstetrics.

On February 15, 2024, the Family Medicine specialization held its fourth Balint group and the first one with the participation of the 12 residents. This activity was used not only to review aspects of the patient-physician relationship, but also to address issues of well-being of each of the residents. Considering that family physicians must resolve their internal issues so that these do not become an obstacle for a holistic and comprehensive care of their patients.

The specialization in Family Medicine in collaborative work with the Faculty of Humanities and the office of inclusion created and carried out on February 12 the first of four narratives of sexuality. This event was called: "The ABC of sex, gender and sexual orientation. The event was attended by Family Medicine residents and faculty, undergraduate medical students and students from the Law program. The session was led by Dr. Isidro Torres Castro from the Family Medicine specialization, Dr. Luis Carlos Quintero Malo from the Faculty of Health Sciences and Dr. Martha Cecilia Abella and Katherine Torres from the Faculty of Humanities. It was an academic event where both speakers and participants expressed their opinions and knowledge on the subject.

March 11, 2024 with the theme "Expressions of sexuality, desire, sex and love".

April 15, 2024 with the theme "Family and sexuality".

May 13, 2024 with the theme "The Pendulum of Sexuality".

The entire academic community and the community in general are invited to participate in this event, which is free of charge.

Diabetes Mellitus type 2

Dr. Shirley Gallo, Internist and Diabetologist, participated as a special guest in the great session "Diabetes Mellitus type 2", conducted by Resident Daniel Almario. Her collaboration allowed both residents and undergraduate students to strengthen the processes of insulin application and monitoring of patients with diabetes mellitus.

Dr. Gallo conducted a practical workshop and taught the participants about the latest advances in glucose self-monitoring and the technology available in our country in this regard.

Fundación Universitaria Navarra -UNINAVARRA started the project "Pasos Seguros: Vida Plena" (Safe Steps: Full Life).

At 07:00 a.m. on January 26, 2024, at the Carmen Emilia Ospina E.S.E., Canaima headquarters, the first patients who participated in the social project of the Family Medicine specialization, "Pasos Seguros, Vida Plena" (Safe Steps, Full Life), were received. An innovative and fundamental initiative, which prioritizes the comprehensive care of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The main objective of this activity is to evaluate the feet of patients, to detect early symptoms and signs of neuropathy, a serious complication of uncontrolled diabetes mellitus.

At the same time, we embarked on a health education mission, sharing crucial knowledge about preventive foot care and diabetes in general. In this event we had the participation of the 12 Family Medicine residents, the interns who are doing their rotation in this area and of course 4 Family Medicine specialist teachers. We were pleased to have the cooperation of 81 patients diagnosed with diabetes mellitus to whom we performed anthropometric measurements, evaluation of lower limbs (deep and superficial sensitivity: tuning fork and monofilament), advice on the results of paraclinical tests and assertive education on type 2 diabetes mellitus. The activity concluded at 12:00 m. with full satisfaction of the participants and an invitation was extended to more patients to continue with this evaluative and educational process.

Cognitive behavioral therapy: Therapeutic approach to facilitate weight loss and weight maintenance in overweight and obese patients.

Within the framework of the great session, "Cognitive behavioral therapy: Therapeutic approach to facilitate weight loss and weight maintenance in overweight and obese patients", conducted by the Family Medicine resident I, Maria Mercedes Araque, had the extraordinary participation of Maria Fernanda Colla. This specialist from her country of origin, Argentina, in addition to advising the resident, made it possible to listen to a wonderful dissertation on cognitive behavioral therapy that allows a transdisciplinary integration and a comprehensive and holistic approach to the subject developed by Dr. Araque.

At 07:00 am, on January 15, 2024, the welcome and induction ceremony was held for the six residents who began their first semester of the Family Medicine specialization at the University Foundation Navarra UNINAVARRA. This event was attended by the deanship of the Faculty of Health, the coordination of the program, teachers, residents of the first court of the specialization, as well as the administrative staff of the institution. All of them were in charge of giving a warm welcome to the new residents and an induction with the basic aspects of both the institution and the program. The new residents expressed to be full of expectations about the program and with the expected fears when approaching this new challenge for their professional life.

First practice at HUSAC, new site

On January 12, 2024, the residents of the Specialization in Family Medicine performed their first practice at HUSAC, new headquarters, having as a scenario simulated consultation and debriefing. With the collaboration of simulated patients, the residents participated in simulation practices, where all aspects of the medical act were observed, including communication, doctor-patient relationship, compilation of clinical data, competencies to perform problem-oriented physical examination and finally diagnostic impression and patient management. This activity was recorded for each resident and afterwards each one had the opportunity to observe and perform self-evaluation, followed by a co-evaluation by their peers and finally the attending teachers present and analyze the different aspects of the medical act performed. The activity concludes successfully and the residents are very satisfied after this practice that contributes to the improvement of their professional activity.

Family Medicine, more than an area of medical knowledge, is an integrating axis of medical practice, which provides holistic and humanized medical care to the person; performing particular processes of characterization, validation of information, management, education and proposal of intervention strategies to focus them on primary health care from a systemic, generalist, differential and inclusive approach that promotes the care of the individual, his family and his community.

This specialization focuses its work on the person; involving the globality and complexity of the being, taking into account both the physical and psychosocial component of the individual and the determinants that modify and maintain their health. For family medicine, health is more than a state of "Well-being", it is the objective and subjective amalgam of factors that, from each of the individual and family life cycles, tend to the harmonious development and the experience of the individual immersed in a social sphere. For this reason, an ethnographic approach is involved where social, family and community relationships and the relationship with the disease itself are pillars of the care process. The ethnographic vision of Family Medicine allows the differential approach of the individual, the family and its cultural group, allowing the production of cost-effective strategies aimed at maintaining the health of specific groups according to their characteristics and needs.

The knowledge and work of the Family Medicine specialist is transversal to the different medical specialties, not as a professional hoarder of knowledge, but as an integrating specialist, mediator and coordinator of medical care, ensuring its resolvability and timeliness. His approach moves away from the separatist perspective and involves the generalization of medical knowledge to provide comprehensive care to individuals, families and communities.

The specialization in Family Medicine is the result of a need for holistic care based on the individual and not on the disease. Due to its principles and focus on prevention, it is a pioneer and fundamental support in integral processes of Primary Health Care and maintenance of the health of individuals, families and communities.
